Kids Smart Watch Security in the Spotlight

How SPACETALK became No. 1 in the world for family privacy and security

As a part of our ongoing series introducing you to the faces behind SPACETALK, today we’re taking a look at our Risk and Compliance team, led by Leanne Lazaridis.

With kids smart watch security being in the spotlight over the past few years, the SPACETALK Risk and Compliance team has worked tirelessly to make SPACETALK the most secure children’s all-in-one phone, GPS tracker and watch on the market – even called ‘hacker-proof’ by globally recognised security experts*.

Data security, privacy and child safety are at the heart of everything we do.

SPACETALK has been accredited for its best practice security and privacy, including authenticated and encrypted communications between subsystems and identity authentication.

SPACETALK firmware, AllMyTribe apps and servers are exclusively developed in Australia.

We protect your privacy to European GDPR privacy standards, meaning your personal data is never shared with anyone. All data is stored in Australia or the UK (depending on where you’re located), never used for advertising or profiling and protected by Australian child safety legislation.

What sets SPACETALK apart…

Several factors set us apart from other children’s smart watch makers.

First, we’ve had a lot of practice in providing socially responsible solutions, with a track record of nearly 20 years in the education sector, providing attendance management and SMS communication services to over 5,000 schools and 6 million parents. This has made us hyper-aware of the need for data protection and encryption over public networks especially where it relates to children and schools.

Second, at the very outset of developing SPACETALK, we undertook an intensive Cyber Security Audit by independent experts to test and validate our systems.

So, looking after your personal data isn’t just lip-service or an afterthought at SPACETALK. The team views what we do not just as a job, but our social responsibility. We have no hesitation in sharing our knowledge with other smart watch makers in this exciting, emerging industry.

We don’t just look at how we manage data from a legal perspective, but also through the lens of the people who are fiercely devoted to the safety and protection of children – whether in families or in schools.

The Risk and Compliance team plays a crucial role in our business because you’ve entrusted us with keeping the most important little people in your lives safe and connected.

Being a data security guru isn’t something you chat about at parties (at least not without a lot of encouragement!), but we are quietly proud of what we do, creating a security culture that has embedded itself in every department in the business.

*About SPACETALK Cyber Security Audits

The first SPACETALK Security Audit was conducted by Dr Matthew Sorell, a digital investigations consultant to law enforcement agencies and academic member of the INTERPOL Digital Forensics Expert Group, specialising in wearables such as smart watches and fitness devices. Dr Sorell is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and Adjunct Professor of Digital Forensics at the Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia.

When compiling his report, he assessed the device, apps and server side first-hand. Over the next year, this intensive research into the SPACETALK AllMyTribe ecosystem became the subject of a smart watch phone security thesis involving students from universities in Adelaide, Germany and Estonia.

In September 2019, a further SPACETALK Security Audit was conducted by Mnemonic, a highly regarded professional security research firm based in Norway (https://www.mnemonic.no). MGM selected Mnemonic to conduct this Audit because the firm had participated in the Norwegian Consumer Council investigation into several children’s watches being sold in Nordic markets.
