How Optus 3G changes affect you

You may have heard about the upcoming changes to the Optus 3G network.

That’s why we are informing all customers using an Optus (or Optus partner) SIM on our Telstra-variant Kids watch, that Optus will soon be making changes to their 3G network that may affect your Spacetalk device.

If you are using a SIM that operates on the Optus network in the Spacetalk Kids Telstra model, your SIM may no longer be able to connect to their network once Optus have made these changes.

Please note: These changes do not affect model number IF-W525C. These devices are tuned for Optus 3G and will continue to work as normal using an Optus network SIM.

Here are all the details.

What exactly is happening?
Optus have announced that they will progressively reconfigure the frequency bands used on their 3G mobile network.

Specifically, these changes relate to the 3G 2100MHz band as they reallocate it for use on their 4G and 5G networks.

This does not mean Optus are closing their 3G network. Optus will leave the 900MHz band in operation to provide their 3G services.

This reconfiguration is expected to be complete by May 2022.

These changes affect Optus as well as other providers who use their network, including Amaysim, Aussie Broadband, Circles.Life, Coles Mobile, Vaya and several more.

More information about these changes can be found on Optus’ website.

How does this affect Spacetalk Kids?
When Optus makes changes to their 3G frequencies, the Optus (or Optus partner) SIM in your Telstra model may no longer be able to connect to a mobile network.

Spacetalk Kids model IF-W515C is tuned to work on two 3G mobile bands – 850MHz and 2100MHz. These are the two frequency bands used by the Telstra 3G network.

Both Optus and Vodafone use 3G mobile bands of 900MHz and 2100MHz and Spacetalk Kids model IF-W525C has been tuned to support these frequencies.
